Dining buying guide
Common questions
What is the difference between stoneware and porcelain dinnerware?
Stoneware is thicker and heavier, usually with a matte or reactive glaze and an earthy look. Porcelain is fired at a higher temperature, so it is thinner, lighter, and less porous. Both are made for everyday meals. Check each listing for its microwave and dishwasher guidance.
How many pieces should a dinnerware set have?
A 12-piece set is service for 4, with a dinner plate, salad plate, and bowl for each person. 16-piece sets usually add a mug or a second bowl. Sets for 6 run 18 to 24 pieces. Buy for the number of people you host, not only who lives with you.
Can melamine dishes go in the microwave?
No. Melamine should not be microwaved, because heat can damage the surface. It is a great pick for patios, picnics, and kids since it resists breaking. Our melamine sets also live in the Outdoor Dining & Melamine collection.
What should I buy after a dinnerware set?
Most tables need flatware, mugs or glasses, and at least one serving platter or bowl. Extra plates and bowls help when you host more people than your set serves. Use the tiles at the top of this page to shop each shelf.
