One cast iron pan that sears, braises, and comes to the table still hot

At a Glance

  • Capacity: 5 quarts, roomy enough for a 3 to 4 lb roast or a family batch of braise
  • Oven-safe: to 500°F with the lid on, so you sear then bake in the same pan
  • Cooktops: gas, electric, ceramic, and induction
  • Lid: self-basting cast iron that rains moisture back over the food
  • Handles: two wide cast iron handles for a secure, two-handed lift

Cast iron does one thing better than any other pan: it takes high heat and holds it. This 5-quart Artisan braiser browns a roast over a hot burner, then slides into the oven to finish low and slow, with no hot spots and no second dish to wash.

Key Features

  • Sear-to-oven in one pan: take it from a 500°F stovetop sear straight into the oven without switching dishes.
  • Self-basting lid: the dimpled underside catches steam and drips it back down, so braises stay moist through long cooks.
  • Even, steady heat: heavy enameled cast iron spreads heat edge to edge and keeps food hot long after the burner is off.
  • Induction-ready: works on every cooktop, induction included, with no adapter and no guessing.
  • No seasoning, no metallic taste: the enamel coating lets you cook tomatoes and wine, then just wash it after.
  • Wide, low shape: more surface than a tall Dutch oven for browning chops and thighs in a single layer.

What's Included

In the box: one 5-quart enameled cast iron braiser and its self-basting cast iron lid.

Before You Buy

  • It is heavy, about 15.5 lb. That heft is exactly what gives cast iron its even, steady heat, but plan to lift it with both handles, especially when it is full.
  • Hand wash only. Warm water and a soft sponge protect the enamel, so skip the dishwasher and dry it after each use.
  • The color is an aqua-blue ombre, deeper at the base and lighter toward the rim, not a flat solid blue.
  • The lid is cast iron, not glass. You lift it to check on the food; there is no see-through window.

Perfect For

  • Braised short ribs, pot roast, and coq au vin that start on the stove and finish in the oven
  • One-pan chicken thighs, pork chops, and shakshuka browned in a single layer
  • Cooks who want stovetop-to-oven-to-table cookware without a nonstick coating to replace

Care & Use

  • Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh detergents that can dull the enamel.
  • Dry thoroughly after washing and before storing.
  • Use wood, silicone, or coated tools to protect the enamel surface, and avoid metal utensils that can chip it.
  • The handles get hot on the stove and in the oven, so always use mitts.

Why cooks reach for cast iron

One pan, stove to oven

Brown meat over high heat, then slide the whole braiser into the oven to finish. The enameled cast iron holds a steady 500°F, so a roast or braise cooks evenly with no hot spots and no second dish to wash.

The lid bastes for you

The dimpled underside of the lid catches rising steam and rains it back over the food, so stews and braises stay moist through long, slow cooks. No basting by hand and no foil tents to fuss with.

Hot long after the burner

Cast iron heats slowly and holds it, so the pan keeps food warm well after you turn off the heat. Carry it straight from the oven to the table and it is still steaming when the seconds come around.

The numbers that matter

Built to take heat and hold it.

500°F Oven-safe with the lid on
5 qt Capacity for a family batch
All 4 Cooktops, induction included

How does it compare to a Dutch oven or a nonstick pan?

vs. a nonstick skillet

A nonstick pan cannot make the jump from a 500°F sear to the oven or hold heat at the table, and its coating scratches and wears out. This braiser does all three with nothing to replace.

vs. a round Dutch oven

A tall Dutch oven is built for deep stews. This wide, low braiser gives you more surface to brown in a single layer, which suits chops, chicken thighs, and short ribs far better.

vs. bare cast iron

Bare cast iron needs seasoning and rusts if it sits wet. The enamel coating skips the seasoning and lets you cook tomatoes and wine without any metallic taste.

Fits your space

A wide, low braiser. Worth checking burner and cabinet space before it arrives.

  • Just over 5 in tall with the lid on, so it clears most range hoods and slides into a standard oven.
  • At about 15.5 lb when full, it is a two-handed lift, so check your cabinet shelf height and strength for storage.

FAQs

Common questions that customers ask

Is it induction compatible?

Yes. The braiser works on induction as well as gas, electric coil, and ceramic smooth-top ranges, because enameled cast iron is naturally magnetic, so no adapter is needed.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Hand washing is recommended to protect the enamel. Warm water, a soft sponge, and a quick dry keep the surface looking new.

How hot can it go in the oven?

It is oven-safe up to 500°F with the lid on, so you can sear on the stove and finish a roast, braise, or bake in the oven.

Is the lid cast iron or glass?

This model has a self-basting cast iron lid, not glass. The dimpled underside bastes the food as it cooks, and you lift it to check on things.

How much does it weigh and how big is it?

About 15.5 pounds, roughly 13 inches across the handles, with a 5-quart capacity. That weight is what gives cast iron its even, steady heat, so plan to lift it with both handles.

Very Pleased with this

Absolutely LOVE this braiser! Heats evenly, easy to clean, hefty, hasn't scratched yet. this is a sturdy, well made enameled cast iron pot! Stove top to oven, terrific. Dang heavy, but it's supposed to be. Really pleased with this purchase.

Must have in your cooking arsenal

Absolutely amazing quality, and construction. This braiser rivals the French made competition in fit and finish at over half the cost.

It was a hit!

I spent Christmas with my daughter and she had this on her wish list. I ordered it for her and she is very pleased with it. The light aqua color is beautiful and matches her kitchen decor. I used it myself while I was there, and it is a lovely enameled cast iron pan with lid. This baby is HEAVY, which made it a challenge for me to wash, and I only washed it by hand. The side handles make it easier to lift and the lid locks in place perfectly. It does not have a non-stick coating, so I had to let it sit in the sink with hot soapy water in it before I could wash it. It seemed to distribute the heat very evenly while cooking in it, and even though I made a skillet lasagna, the tomato sauce did not leave any stains on the interior. This is a heavy duty quality piece of cookware.

I love it! But, there is a tiny chip inside

I love this braiser. It's a lovely color, and worked well for a ground beef, alfredo and green bean casserole I made. I lightly sprayed it with non-stick spray, and nothing stuck. It washed perfectly and easily, without having to soak it. Nothing burned, and it baked up beautifully. My only concern, and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5, is it came with a tiny chip, or blemish, inside that I am a little concerned will grow larger over time. Hopefully, the seller will see this review and let me know if it'll be fine, or if it needs replacing. I hope I don't need to return it as that's a pain, but I also don't want to find the chip getting larger, rendering the braiser unusable.

Crock-Pot built its name on slow, steady, hands-off cooking, and this Artisan cast iron carries that idea to the stovetop and oven. Enameled by hand and made to last, it is the pan you reach for when dinner should take care of itself while you take care of everything else.
