How to Buy Furniture Online Without Regretting It the Moment It Arrives

Modern living room furniture and sofa

The sofa looked perfect in the photos. The dimensions seemed fine. Then it arrived — and it was either too big for the room, too wide to get through the hallway, or just completely wrong in person.

Buying furniture online is a different skill than buying it in a showroom. You can't sit on it, you can't feel the scale of it, and the room in the photo is never your room. But with the right prep, you can get it right almost every time.

Here's exactly what to do before you click buy.

Step 1: Measure Your Room First — All of It

Don't start by browsing. Start with a tape measure. Write down the length and width of the room, the height of the ceilings, and the location of windows, doors, and any fixed features like radiators or built-in shelving.

These numbers tell you the hard limits. A sofa that's 110 inches wide physically cannot live in a room that's 120 inches wide — you need space to move around it.

The rule of thumb for seating: Leave at least 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table, and at least 30–36 inches of walking space around major pieces.

Step 2: Measure the Path In

This is the mistake people make most often. A piece of furniture might fit perfectly in your room — but can it actually get there?

Measure your front door opening, any interior doorways it needs to pass through, stairwells if applicable, and hallway widths. Pay special attention to tight turns — a long sofa that just barely fits through a door might not make the 90-degree turn at the top of the stairs.

Key measurements to record:

  • Door opening width (not the frame — the actual opening)
  • Hallway width at the narrowest point
  • Stairwell width and height of each landing
  • Any tight corners or low ceilings along the route

Step 3: Use Painter's Tape to Test It in the Room

This sounds old-fashioned, but it works. Before you order, use painter's tape on the floor to mark out the exact footprint of the piece you're considering. Live with it for a day. Walk around it. Sit where you'd normally sit. Notice whether it feels like it belongs or whether it's eating up the room.

This takes 10 minutes and has saved thousands of dollars in return shipping fees.

Step 4: Understand What Dimensions Actually Mean

Product listings give you length, width, and height — but not all dimensions are equal. For sofas, the seat depth is often more important than overall length. A sofa might be 84 inches wide but have a seat depth of only 20 inches, which will feel cramped for taller people.

For dining tables, the listed size is usually the tabletop — not the space you actually need. Add 24 inches per side for chairs to slide out comfortably. A 60-inch dining table realistically needs about 9 feet of clear floor space.

For beds: The mattress size and the bed frame size are different. A queen bed frame is typically 65–67 inches wide, even though the mattress is 60 inches. Always check the frame dimensions, not just the mattress size.

Step 5: Check the Return Policy Before You Buy

Even if you do everything right, things can still not work out. Before you order any large piece of furniture online, read the return policy carefully. Some retailers charge return shipping fees that can exceed $100 for large items. Know that going in.

Look for specifics: how many days you have to return, whether you need original packaging, and whether the return is free or at your cost.

  2. Doorways, hallways, and stairwells measured
